Malta has hosted a number of important productions over the years and our company was offering a wide range of services to the international film industry.  For that reason, we had established a company namely Bastions Productions Limited, which was a pioneer in offering services to several production companies.

Malta’s Film Production Studios at the time managed to secure the production of U 571 film, produced by one of the most famous Italian production companies.  Following several negotiations with Messrs. De Laurentis’ team, we managed to secure a very prestigious job, that of designing and building a self propelled submarine which would also submerge up to a certain depth.

It tooks us nearly 8 months to fabricate and finish the submarine.  We were also entrusted to fabricate miniature versions of the same submarine that was used for filming.

We were sub-contracted by GMP, a consortium between OFM, ICSA and SETH of Portugal, to carry out capital dredging works in Port of Bejaia (Phase 1).

For this project, which lasted almost 2 years we had to mobilize our equipment from Malta to Algeria via sea transport. For this project we used a heavy grab dredger, 2 split barges, 1 coastal tugboat and 1 work boat. As part of the project, we also covered project management and surveying of the bays through our internal resources.

This was a project that our Company could cover through the vast experience in this field. The material dredged could only be handled with specialised equipment as it was highly compacted and odorous. High levels of safety standards were applied to safeguard the well-being of all the crew working on this project.

Works were finally surveyed and certified by the Algerian Port Authorities.

Our clients Geocean SA and Entrepose were awarded a multi-million contract for mine works at the Sirte Power Plant in Libya. Malta being so close to Libya was a natural choice for our clients to prepare their materials and equipment for the project.

We were initially engaged to provide a logistical base for their marine equipment which we safely accommodated at our facilities in Church Wharf and Coal Wharf, Marsa. Over the following months we were sub-contractors to several other works such as fabrication of steel structures, gangways, ladders, pipes, hatches and finally the casting of many concrete sinkers weighing in the region of 4,000 tons.

We also provided the transport and towage of such material onboard our barges all the way from Malta to Sirte, Libya. We were also appointed by our clients to carry out dredging works of a maintenance nature at the Power Plant in Sirte. The purpose of our works was to allow the discharging of the Power Plant pipes allowing them to be embedded on the seabed. The dredging equipment used was primarily the grab dredger, the hopper barge and the work boat. Our spud barge was later deployed to accurately place the discharged pipes in their final position.

We pride ourselves in covering this major project through all our own equipment and staff personnel. All deadlines were met without exception to the satisfaction of both our clients.

Description

Following an international tendering call made by Electrogas Malta Limited, our company was awarded the tender for the design and built of LNG gangway and pedestal mounted crane on the offshore jetty at new Delimara Power Station. The gangway was to be set up to give access to the Floating Storage Unit which was to be berthed in Delimara to service the new Power Station.

We had engaged MICS Malta Limited to engineer the gangway, which consisted in a 25-meter-high steel structure with a hydraulically operated passarelle. All works, including electrical fittings were designed to the highest standards and matched all safety protocols required in an LNG terminal.

Apart from the gangway, a 20-meter-high pedestal crane had to be designed, fitted and commissioned by our company on the offshore jetty. The purpose of this crane was to allow the handling of materials from land directly onto the floating storage unit. The marine crane was purchased from Holland, shipped to Malta, and fitted on the pedestal.

The main challenges of this project were the fitting of these big structures and machinery from the
seaside point. The operation was more complex as we had to coordinate our works with those of another Greek contractor who at the same time was doing the pipe works and mechanical fittings on the offshore jetty. To facilitate these works we had used a large barge measuring 90 meters in length and on which we had mounted our 200-ton crane required for our works.

All above structures were fabricated and assembled by our company. All our works were duly certified by an IACS firm (international association of classification society) and completed to the best of standards and to the full satisfaction of our client.

This is one of the most important projects carried out by our Group on a national level. Following several years of news related to the closure of Marsa Power Station, our Company Salv. Bezzina & Sons Ltd was the main contractor winning an international call for tenders. The project was of national importance given the environmental impact of the project and the extensive coverage given by the local media on this project.

Ironically, our Company founder Salvatore Bezzina, together with his sons Anthony and Victor were the main contractors setting up the Marsa Power Station way back in the 1960/70s. They had effectively dismantled the power plant in the UK and eventually assembled and commissioned it in Malta.

This dismantling project involved the removal of circa 18,000 tons of steel, aluminium and other material, the excavation of circa 300,000m3 of in earth waste and the disposal of several tons of contaminated and hazardous waste generated by the same Power Station in Marsa. Several high steel structures were carefully dispatched and carted away following a rigorous waste separation process. To cover this process Bezzina Group abided by the strictest of standards and necessary permits.

The most prominent landmarks from this power plant were the removal of 3 in number 45-meter concrete chimneys and the removal of 1 in number 75-meter steel chimney, which had originally been erected by our Company way back in 1985. The iconic 90-meter concrete chimney had to be demolished in one whole. This operation was the first one of its kind in Malta and it was aired live on national TV as the local government’s main promise to shift to greener energy. The whole process was a complete success, and this project is marked as one of our main achievements as a Group.

MY Ocean Liberty was designed by the prestigious Camper and Nicholson in 1966. In the year 2000 the owners issued an international call, through their management company, to refurbish and complete an overhaul of the Yacht.

The Owners of this beautiful yacht had picked our yard because they were impressed with the facilities we could offer and all the works we could cover with our own personnel. At the time the yacht was berthed in Monte Carlo and it sailed to Malta for this extensive project to be completely overhauled. The fact that the yacht travelled all the way to Malta clearly showed the owner’s willingness to do the works at our yard.

As in other projects we ensured that we gave our all towards this project giving the crew of the Ocean Liberty the best of hospitalities. This is one of our major strong points of our yard. We fall in love with the Yachts we are servicing and maintaining treating them as if they are our own. During the works we kept constant communication with the yacht captain clearly explaining the progress and the works being done. The following are the main works we covered for the Ocean Liberty:

  • Big repairs to the hull
  • Alterations to the aluminium super structure
  • Installation of new electrical wiring and systems
  • Installation of new engines and generators
  • Fitting of new piping and fire-fighting system
  • Replacement of upholstery
  • New furniture and fittings
  • Replacement and installation of new teak decking
  • New woodwork
  • Overall painting of the yacht which was fully under our responsibility.

This was one of the most challenging but most rewarding contracts we completed in recent years. The input of our engineering department was crucial in the success of this project. All works were completed in the most professional manner and to the satisfaction of the Captain and the Ship Owners. In the end this is always our ultimate objective.

This was our company’s dream. Our very own design and building of a luxurious motor yacht. The design was carried out by a reputable Italian engineering company and all the building works were carried out by our yard.

Fabrication of the hull and superstructure were completely done in-house at our state-of-the-art fabrication shop. The same with regards to all the wood which were completely done by our experienced carpenters with the support of several reputable sub-contractors in the marine industry locally. Piping, firefighting, mechanical and engineering works were all performed by our engineering department. All electronic equipment was purchased from Italy and commissioned by our yard. The painting of the hull, the superstructure and the teak decking were carried out to
highest levels and the finest of details by our own professional employees.

The complete built of this vessel at our yard is the first one of its kind in Malta. To top it up this Motor Yacht was completed in just under one year. This is an exceptional timing considering all the complexities this project entailed.
